On September 4, a woman in her 60s who had been reported missing was found dead inside the freezer of a large cafe in Paju. The suspect is the cafe owner in his 30s, surnamed Shin, who met the victim for the first time on the day of the incident. The shock was compounded by the discovery of an astonishing 50.8 billion won worth of counterfeit department store gift certificates at the scene.
Shin reportedly commissioned a plate-making company to produce the gift certificates in late July, claiming they would be used as movie props. An acquaintance of Shin who met with the production team stated that they had previously heard Shin talk about involvement in counterfeiting gift certificates, raising suspicions that the current incident may also be linked to those issues.
In particular, suspicions of a premeditated crime were raised as circumstances revealed that Shin had instructed a part-time worker to set the freezer temperature to minus 25 degrees Celsius the day before the incident. However, Shin has denied the charges, claiming there was no intent to commit murder.
