Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, announced on September 17 that it has set its living wage for 2027 at 12,630 won, a 10% increase from this year.
The city's Labor-Management-Government Council held a regular meeting at the city hall briefing room the previous day and voted on the decision.
The council determined the living wage by comprehensively considering general economic conditions, including consumer inflation, the minimum wage, the growth rate of average worker wages, and the city's fiscal conditions.
In particular, the decision reflected the fact that last year's living wage increase was limited to 1.7% due to tax revenue conditions and other factors, remaining lower than those of other cities and counties.
The living wage is a system that pays wages higher than the legal minimum wage by comprehensively factoring in housing costs, education expenses, and prices to enable workers to maintain a life with human dignity.
The living wage will apply to approximately 2,000 workers, including those affiliated with the city and city-funded or invested institutions, as well as workers belonging to institutions and companies entrusted with city affairs or providing construction, services, and other supplies to the city.
