The incumbent vice chair of Samsung Electronics' largest labor union announced plans to request an investigation by authorities, raising various allegations of irregularities regarding the execution of union dues by union leader Choi Seung-ho.
Following previous controversies over a contract with the union leader's father-in-law, the latest issues center on credit card and point benefits generated during the purchase of a resort membership worth hundreds of millions of won and department store goods.
Lee Song-yi, vice chair of the Samsung Electronics Inter-Company Labor Union, abruptly unveiled accounting data, receipts, KakaoTalk conversations, and recorded materials today (September 16).
The first issue raised by Vice Chair Lee was the resort membership purchased using union dues.
The total amount paid as the first-installment for two contracts was 235.2 million won.
Vice Chair Lee claimed that this amount was paid using leader Choi's personal credit card.
Pointing out that the union ledger contained no records regarding benefits such as mileage generated from these payments, she argued that it is necessary to verify who actually accumulated the benefits.
Department store purchase records exceeding 100 million won were also made public.
According to the data released by Vice Chair Lee, receipts for union goods purchased at Lotte Department Store in Dongtan totaled approximately 112.29 million won.
The receipts displayed L.POINTs under a name starting with Choi and ending with ho (Choi *-ho).
Including these cases, Vice Chair Lee estimated the total scale of union expenditures where benefits from the payment process may have accrued to an individual to be 425.96 million won.
However, it has not yet been confirmed whether the actual points or mileage were accumulated in leader Choi's personal account, or if they were used for personal purposes.
Vice Chair Lee also argued that there is a need to verify other circumstances, such as contracts with a business run by leader Choi's father-in-law, purchasing goods in quantities exceeding initial plans, and paying vehicle usage fees to relatives.
She stated, "The expenditures directly handled by the union leader were the hardest to obtain receipts for," adding that she will attach all original versions of the disclosed data and request an investigation by law enforcement agencies.
In response, leader Choi countered that the contract with his father-in-law's company was the result of comparing prices, quality, and delivery schedules among multiple businesses, and that no financial benefits were returned to him.
Regarding the resort membership, he explained that it was a flawless execution that had undergone an external audit.
Leader Choi stated that he is reviewing legal action against the spread of false information surrounding him.
