A man in his 60s who attempted to kill villagers by putting pesticide into food they were about to eat has been sentenced to prison in his appeal trial as well.
The Chuncheon Branch of the Seoul High Court dismissed the prosecutors appeal during the sentencing hearing for A, who was charged with attempted murder, and upheld the lower court's ruling of one year and six months in prison.
A was put on trial for attempting to kill an unspecified number of people in Chuncheon in June 2024 by pouring pesticide into a spicy fish stew prepared by villagers for lunch while under the influence of alcohol.
No casualties occurred as the residents found the strange odor coming from the stew suspicious and refrained from eating it, and the amount of pesticide added was also small.
During the first-instance trial, A claimed that he put the pesticide in to catch flies, but that he could not remember the specific circumstances well.
However, the court stated that strict punishment was necessary even considering that the crime ended up as an impossible attempt.
The prosecution, which had demanded two years and six months in prison, appealed on the grounds that the sentence was too light, but the appellate court dismissed it, deeming the original sentence appropriate.
