The South Korean government signed a total of 35 agreements, accords, and memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with the governments of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan on Monday, September 14.
The signing came as President Lee Jae-myung held separate bilateral summit meetings with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, with ministries pledging to strengthen intergovernmental cooperation.
With Tajikistan, South Korea signed 17 cooperation documents, including an MOU on advancing cooperation in the fields of industry and innovation.
Key contents include expanding exports in textiles, chemicals, and machinery; laying the groundwork to enter artificial intelligence (AI) and digital sectors; strengthening cooperation in railways, transportation, logistics, intellectual property rights, energy, and industrial safety; and exploring partnerships in critical minerals and the green transition.
The documents signed that day also included measures to strengthen cooperation between customs authorities and police to counter transnational crime, as well as to expand exchanges in personnel administration, anti-corruption efforts, and education.
With Kyrgyzstan, 18 documents were concluded, including a revised MOU on trade and investment cooperation.
Multiple MOUs were signed to broaden cooperation in areas such as critical minerals, halal markets, infrastructure development, livestock technology, energy, and intellectual property, while expanding bilateral trade and investment and laying the groundwork for public-private partnership projects.
In addition, both sides pledged diverse cooperation in culture and sports, and agreed to strengthen coordination in disaster management as well as in customs and policing, which are closely tied to countering transnational crime.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and the Ministry of Education of Kyrgyzstan, as well as the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the city of Bishkek, also signed respective MOUs pledging mutual exchanges.
