A Chinese tourist in his 20s has been indicted for illegally filming the bodies of more than 20 women in areas such as Seongsu-dong, Mapo, and Yeongdeungpo in Seoul.
The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors Office indicted a Chinese national, surnamed A, without detention on charges of filming using cameras or other devices under the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.
At around 6 p.m. on August 4, A was caught in the act while secretly filming a woman's body parts with his smartphone at a cafe in Seongsu-dong, Seoul.
An investigation of A's smartphone by the police revealed a massive haul of illegally filmed videos and photos taken not only in Seongsu-dong, but also in crowded major areas across Seoul, including Mapo-gu and Yeongdeungpo-gu.
So far, the number of confirmed victims alone reaches 27.
It has not yet been confirmed whether the illicit footage was distributed externally.
A, who entered South Korea for tourism purposes in late July, has been subject to a travel ban since August 5 during the investigation process.
The police plan to investigate whether the illicit footage was distributed externally and step up crackdowns on illegal filming crimes targeting multiple victims.
