▲ Electronic display board introducing Chinese attire as Hanbok
The Gyeongbuk Culture & Tourism Organization has sparked controversy after an electronic display board in the Bomun Tourist Complex in Gyeongju, which introduces traditional attire from various countries, mistakenly labeled Chinese-style clothing as Hanbok while featuring a figure in Chinese garments.
According to the Gyeongbuk Culture & Tourism Organization on today (the 15th), the organization recently installed and operated a "POST APEC Media Wall" electronic display board in the plaza near the floating performance stage inside the Bomun Tourist Complex, which broadcasted Hanbok as being Chinese attire.
While the country introduced on the display board was China, and the figure's attire was also Chinese-style clothing,
the outfit was nevertheless introduced as "Hanbok," creating the misconception that Hanbok is Chinese clothing.
This display board is a facility that was installed at the Huban Plaza in the Bomun Tourist Complex during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in Gyeongju last year.
The organization was running content introducing the traditional clothing of the 21 participating APEC nations after recently relocating and reinstalling the display board.
A local resident who witnessed the scene pointed out, "At a time when there are already ongoing attempts by China to incorporate Hanbok into its traditional attire, this is content that could provoke misunderstandings."
In response, an official from the Gyeongbuk Culture & Tourism Organization explained, "We have been running a test operation since a few days ago, and a broadcasting error occurred. We have currently suspended the broadcast and plan to resume it after making corrections."
