Police and firefighting authorities are responding to a report that Freon refrigerant gas leaked from a 769-ton Russian fishing vessel moored in Gamcheon-dong, Saha-gu, Busan, at around 8:37 a.m. today.
The accident injured four Russian crew members, two of whom are in cardiac arrest.
Forty police and firefighting personnel are inspecting the inside and surrounding areas of the ship in preparation for the potential occurrence of additional casualties.
Fifteen crew members were on board the vessel where the accident occurred.
Freon gas, which is colorless and odorless at room temperature, is used as a refrigerant in refrigerators and air conditioners.
Although its toxicity is relatively low, inhaling Freon gas while working in a confined space can cause asphyxiation.
Fire authorities and police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
