The Chungbuk Provincial Police Agency's metropolitan investigation unit announced today (Sept. 15) that it has arrested an individual in their 30s, referred to as A, and sent two accomplices to prosecutors without detention on charges of extortion for allegedly demanding settlement money and other funds from restaurant owners by claiming that stones found in their food broke their teeth.
A and the accomplices are accused of extorting a total of 20 million won from 67 restaurant owners while targeting restaurants in the Chungcheong and Gyeonggi regions between February and June of this year.
Police investigations revealed that the suspects demanded money under the guise of medical expenses and settlements, claiming foreign objects in the food had broken their teeth.
After receiving a tip-off in June, the police launched an investigation and identified additional victims through the Korea Foodservice Industry Association and the Chungbuk Restaurant Association.
