A man in his 30s who drove drunk on his way to a police station for a drunk driving investigation has ultimately been sentenced to prison.
The Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 1 announced that it sentenced a man in his 30s, surnamed A, to two years in prison on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act.
In July of last year, A was caught driving for about 8 kilometers in Buk-gu, Ulsan, in a severely intoxicated state with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.164%.
About a month later, at dawn in August, he drove while intoxicated for about 14 kilometers from Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, to Ulsan.
At the end of the same month, on his way to the police station to undergo investigation for the previous drunk driving offense, he drove a vehicle while intoxicated for another 17 kilometers or so.
Afterwards, his driver's license was revoked, but in early September, he drove drunk without a license and crashed into a warehouse.
Getting behind the wheel again on his way home after handling the accident, A was caught once more for driving under the influence without a license.
This means he drove under the influence five times in a span of about two months.
The court pointed out, "The defendant repeatedly drove under the influence multiple times over a short period, even while fully capable of recognizing the risks and illegality of his actions."
It added, "Although the defendant admits to his wrongdoing, his awareness of the law and willingness to prevent reoffending appear to be extremely weak, making severe punishment necessary."
