With just five days to go before the opening of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, the accommodation issues for national delegations remain unresolved.
According to the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, representatives from the 45 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) under the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) competing in this Asian Games have strongly criticized the organizing committee over various issues during a meeting of heads of delegations.
The biggest problem is accommodation.
Citing cost-cutting and eco-friendly initiatives, the organizing committee established a lodging policy of staying in prefabricated containers and large cruise ships instead of building high-rise apartment-style athletes' villages.
Athletes will be distributed among existing accommodations like hotels accommodating about 9,000 people, large cruise ships (about 4,000 people), and container accommodations (about 2,000 people).
However, it has been reported that there is a shortage of bedrooms at the container athletes' village built in Nagoya Bay.
An official from the Sport & Olympic Committee explained, "If the organizing committee promised to provide a specific NOC with 100 bedrooms at the container athletes' village, 20 bedrooms are currently falling short."
South Korea is sending a delegation of 1,052 athletes across 41 sports to the Asian Games.
Among them, the men's basketball, jiu-jitsu, and cycling teams—spanning five sports—along with three headquarters officials of the South Korean delegation, will stay at the container athletes' village, where three people share a room and up to six people are accommodated per block.
Athletes from 18 sports, including archery, table tennis, judo, and gymnastics, will live on a cruise ship docking at the Kinjo Pier in Nagoya Port on the 15th.
With hotel reservations for spectators coming from various Asian countries as well as the delegations mostly completed, the organizing committee is reportedly acknowledging the bedroom shortage at the container athletes' village and belatedly scrambling to secure hotels.
