U.S. President Donald Trump stated yesterday (the 13th, local time) regarding calls to "slow down" artificial intelligence (AI), saying, "Frankly, the side that wins in AI is the winner, and I want to keep it that way."
Visiting Ireland, President Trump met with reporters at his golf resort in Doonbeg that day and, when asked whether the AI industry should slow its pace or face more regulations, stated, "We are ahead of China in AI. We are the most technologically advanced nation in the world."
President Trump added, "We can put guardrails in. We can do various things," while pointing out, "I think there are too many negative forces highlighting things that shouldn't be highlighted. They are highlighting things that are not going to happen."
Recently, following a wave of resignations by researchers from Anthropic and Google who warned that AI could slip out of human control and lead to the end of humanity, industry leaders such as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei have been arguing for an AI slowdown.
President Trump's remarks that day are interpreted as an intention to maintain the current U.S. AI policy of accelerating AI development despite these warning messages.
President Trump emphasized, "The person who wins in AI becomes the winner. That's a phrase I coined, but it's true."
