Regarding the controversy surrounding Minister of Gender Equality and Family nominee HYEIN, Cheong Wa Dae stated today (September 11) that its position is that "an opportunity must be provided for her to offer explanations to the public."
Senior Spokesperson Kang Yu-jung made the remarks during a briefing when asked whether the possibility of withdrawing HYEIN's nomination remains open.
Regarding HYEIN holding a press conference the previous day to counter the allegations raised against her, Kang drew a line, stating, "There was no separate consultation with Cheong Wa Dae. This matter is also unrelated to President Lee Jae-myung's state visit to France."
In response to Democratic Party leader Kim Min-seok assessing the selection of Minister of Justice nominee Kim Seung-won as a "well-made appointment," Kang stated, "We have nothing specific to add to the party leader's remarks."
Kang added, "Those nominated as cabinet ministers should be given the opportunity through confirmation hearings to explain their job suitability and state their positions on the allegations. Providing an opportunity to explain [to the public] is the right thing to do."
This is interpreted as a reiteration of the existing stance that the parliamentary confirmation hearings must proceed first regarding the controversial nominees, Minister of Gender Equality and Family nominee HYEIN and Minister of Justice nominee Kim Seung-won.
At the same time, Senior Spokesperson Kang added, "Cheong Wa Dae is listening attentively to the diverse voices of the public."
Regarding the controversy over lax personnel verification surrounding the ministerial nominations, Kang remarked, "While it is difficult to detail the specific personnel verification process, the Lee Jae-myung administration finalizes appointments under the responsibility of the chairperson of the personnel committee through the personnel system. We are supplementing the personnel system so that it falls short of nothing from the public's perspective, and we will continue to strengthen it further."
