A 25-year-old man, identified by the surname A, has been sentenced to prison for biting off part of a coworker's finger, resulting in amputation.
The Gwangju District Court's Criminal Division 13, presided over by Judge Lee Jung-ho, sentenced A to one year and two months in prison on charges of inflicting bodily injury.
A was put on trial for punching his coworker, B, and biting his hand so severely that one of his finger joints was severed around 12:20 a.m. on September 21 of last year in Naju, South Jeolla Province.
A committed the act after wrapping up a company dinner, angered by the belief that B had treated a junior colleague improperly.
B was unable to undergo replantation surgery because the damage to the severed finger joint was too severe.
The court acknowledged the severity of the damage suffered by B.
However, determining that the injury did not reach the level of a permanent disability, the court found A guilty under the general charge of inflicting bodily injury rather than the heavier charge of severe bodily injury.
