Sixteen-year-old national team golfer Son Jay (affiliated with Dongnae High School's attached correspondence high school) has won the 72nd Hur Jeong-gu Cup Korean Amateur Golf Championship.
Playing in the final fourth round of the tournament held at Namseoul Country Club in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province today (the 11th), Son shaved 3 strokes off to finish with a combined total of 12-under-par, edging out Ahn Sung-hyun (11-under-par, 273 strokes) by a single stroke to claim the championship.
This marks Son's third victory of the season, following wins at the Imsil N Cheese Cup in April and the Songam Cup in August.
Son said, "I think the Hur Jeong-gu Cup is the largest scale among amateur tournaments."
"I couldn't predict whether I would be able to win, so I am truly happy to have achieved it."
"I will work even harder in the future to become a player who represents South Korea," he added.
The Korean Amateur Golf Championship is one of the Korea Golf Association's national title events, and the "Hur Jeong-gu" name was added to honor the late Hur Jeong-gu, who served as the president of the Korea Golf Association and the inaugural president of the Korea Professional Golfers' Association.
