A man in his 30s who approached women on social media by impersonating a doctor and swindled tens of millions of won has been sentenced to prison.
According to the legal community on the 10th, Judge Park Kwang-min of Criminal Division 1 at the Cheongju District Court sentenced A (39), who was indicted without detention on fraud charges, to eight months in prison and placed him under court custody.
In May of last year, A deceived a woman in her 30s, surnamed B, whom he met on a KakaoTalk open chat room, by claiming to be a university hospital doctor and promised to marry her.
He was investigated for taking about 78 million won from B across eight instances between May and June of the same year under the pretexts of covering repair costs for a drunk driving accident, inheritance taxes, and loan repayments.
In November of the same year, A approached another woman in her 30s, surnamed C, whom he met on a dating app, using the same method and swindled 3 million won from her.
Investigations showed that he deceived her by claiming he was paying off his father's debts instead and that he needed money to lift an attachment on his bank account caused by the process.
Judge Park stated the reason for sentencing, saying, "The defendant has a criminal record for similar offenses, the crime method is very poor, and he failed to reach a settlement with B." The judge added, "However, we considered factors such as the considerable recovery of damages for C."
