A fire broke out on a cargo ship docked for repairs at a shipyard in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China, resulting in heavy casualties, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported on the 10th.
According to Xinhua, the fire broke out at around 11:15 a.m. today on a foreign-flagged cargo ship that was docked and undergoing repairs at a shipyard in Qingdao.
Xinhua stated that the accident caused heavy casualties, but did not disclose specific numbers for deaths, injuries, or the missing.
Following the accident, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered authorities to accelerate the search for missing persons, make every effort to comfort the bereaved families, and handle the aftermath of the accident.
He also called for a prompt investigation into the cause of the accident and strict accountability in accordance with the law.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang likewise instructed officials to concentrate all efforts on rescue operations, the treatment of the injured, and accident management, while thoroughly preventing secondary disasters.
China's Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched a working team to the scene to support on-site response efforts, and Shandong provincial authorities are also carrying out rescue and accident management operations, Xinhua reported.
