The mother of singer Jang Yoon Jeong, who was accused of deceiving an acquaintance out of tens of millions of won, has been sentenced to prison in the first trial.
The Seoul Eastern District Court sentenced 70-year-old surnamed Yuk, who was detained on fraud charges, to 10 months in prison.
The court stated, "She has admitted and confessed to the criminal acts, and based on the victim's statement and the defendant's account transaction details, all the charges in the indictment are recognized as guilty," adding, "Considering the method and results, the nature of the crime is poor, and victim restitution has not been made."
Yuk is accused of taking 31 million won on three occasions from an acquaintance under the pretext of investment between September 2024 and August of the following year, while mentioning her daughter Jang, a famous singer.
She deceived the victim with false claims that celebrities were also investing and that it yielded substantial returns.
The court took into unfavorable consideration the fact that Yuk had served a prison sentence in 2018 for failing to repay about 400 million won borrowed from an acquaintance, as well as the fact that she recently received a summary order for fraud.
However, the court stated that it considered in sentencing the fact that Yuk admitted to her crimes and was in poor health.
During the first trial on August 27, prosecutors demanded a 1.6-year prison sentence for Yuk, stating, "Despite having a record of serving actual prison time for fraud using a similar method, she led to this case."
At the time, Yuk's side admitted to the charges, expressed deep remorse, and appealed for leniency, stating, "Living expenses and credit card bills were needed, and the defrauded funds were also spent on living expenses."
