Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae stated today (Sept. 10), "I believe the president's approval ratings are declining because of prosecutor reform, and there is no other reason."
Appearing on the YouTube channel Kim Ou-jun's Humility Is Hard News Factory this morning, Governor Choo made the remarks in response to a question about why President Lee Jae-myung's approval ratings are falling.
She added, "When the nation lost its sovereignty, independence was the ultimate livelihood reform. Afterward, democratization was the ultimate livelihood reform, and now prosecutor reform is that reform, which I think is more important than constitutional amendment." She continued, "If we fear a backlash regarding prosecutor reform, which is the primary reform for those of us living in this era, all doubts flood in, and that is how supporters feel."
In addition, Governor Choo expressed her unvarnished positions on political issues such as the appointment of the inaugural candidate for the head of the Major Crime Investigation Agency and the organizational structure of the Prosecution Service.
Regarding the appointment of candidate Kim Ji-yong as head of the Major Crime Investigation Agency, she criticized it by mentioning his background in the investigation team for the Kim Hak-yi departure ban case, saying, "Placing someone whose career epitomizes distortion after distortion in a position that requires excellent investigative skills is the height of contradiction."
Regarding the organizational structure of the Prosecution Service, which has sparked controversy due to the maintenance of staff quotas for prosecution prosecutors, she stated, "Carrying over the prosecution-centric organizational structure as it is lays bare the inner thoughts of prosecutors who view the introduction of democratic judicial principles of checks and balances through the separation of investigation and indictment as a fiction." She added, "As for prosecutor support personnel, two staff members for every three prosecutors is sufficient."
Governor Choo also reiterated the fiscal crisis situation in Gyeonggi Province that she has consistently emphasized since taking office.
She explained, "Gyeonggi Province is a non-subsidized local government that mainly relies on real estate acquisition taxes. However, various areas within Gyeonggi Province are designated as land transaction permit zones, and the government is currently pursuing public housing policies, causing tax revenues to continuously decrease." She added, "That is why the local tax system needs an overhaul, and I have also spoken to the president about this necessity."
