The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has passed a resolution referring Iran to the United Nations Security Council over violations of its nuclear non-proliferation obligations.
This marks the first time in 20 years that the IAEA board has referred Iran to the Security Council.
On the 9th local time, the IAEA board pointed out that Iran has failed to cooperate regarding a long-running investigation into uranium traces discovered by inspectors at multiple undeclared sites in Iran.
The resolution, jointly submitted by the United States, Britain, France, and Germany, was approved by 23 of the 35 IAEA member states on the board, while China, Russia, and Niger voted against it.
Eight countries abstained, and one country did not participate in the vote due to overdue contributions.
Iran's mission to the IAEA criticized the resolution via social media, calling it "political and biased."
This resolution is a follow-up measure to the resolution adopted on June 12 of last year.
In that previous resolution, the IAEA determined that Iran was not complying with its non-proliferation obligations.
Just one day after the adoption of that resolution, Israel began bombing Iran's nuclear facilities, and the United States soon followed by attacking Iranian nuclear facilities.
