Amid continuing attacks targeting each other's vessels between the United States and Iran, a large oil tanker has been hit by what is presumed to be a drone attack in Iraqi territorial waters.
On the morning of the 9th local time, the Panamanian-flagged tanker New Andros was struck by a projectile presumed to be an unidentified drone in Iraqi territorial waters, causing a fire on its hull.
There were 22 crew members aboard the New Andros, and it was carrying approximately 2 million barrels of fuel oil.
The Iraqi Ministry of Oil stated through a release, "The hull leased and used for storage purposes by the Iraqi Oil Tanker Company (IOTC) suffered minor damage from an unidentified attack."
On the same day, a series of ship attacks also took place in Gulf waters.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), under the British Navy, reported that multiple merchant vessels in the northern Gulf and the Gulf of Oman were hit by gunfire that rendered them inoperable.
In addition, a vessel appearing to have been hit by an unidentified projectile attack was found listing near Port Rashid in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Iran announced that it had attacked 10 vessels near the Strait of Hormuz.
This is in retaliation for the United States sinking five of its tankers, marking the largest-scale vessel attack since the outbreak of the war.
