It has been revealed that a driver in their 20s, who was caught driving under the influence, drove home again after being stopped by the police.
According to the Jemulpo Police Station in Incheon, at around 10:35 PM on September 2, a vehicle driven by a person in their 20s, identified as A, rear-ended a stopped car waiting at a traffic light on a road toward the Neunghae Interchange at the Seohae Intersection in Jemulpo-gu.
The driver of the victim vehicle sustained minor injuries in the accident.
During the accident handling process, the police conducted a breathalyzer test on A and confirmed a blood alcohol concentration level warranting the revocation of a driver's license.
When a driver is caught driving under the influence, police are required to take on-site safety measures to prevent them from driving again—such as having them call a designated driver or a third party like a family member who can drive, or keeping the vehicle keys at the police station. However, it was found that the police completed the investigation to book A and left the scene without taking these follow-up measures.
Consequently, investigations showed that A drove their own vehicle back home while still under the influence.
It was reported that an insurance agent who came to the scene to handle the accident witnessed A driving again and reported it to the police.
The police have booked A on charges of dangerous driving resulting in injury under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Crimes and are investigating the case.
The police stated, "We have taken measures to prevent such incidents from recurring, including conducting relevant training for our officers."
