The Korea Tennis Association announced today that it is targeting up to four gold medals in men's and women's singles and doubles at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
The association announced the 12-member national team roster for the Asian Games.
The men's team, led by head coach Jeong Jong-sam (Myongji University) and coach Kim Sun-yong (Orion), includes Kwon Soon-woo (Chungnam Provincial Government), Hong Sung-chan, Nam Ji-sung (both of Dangjin City Hall), Shin San-hee (Gyeongsan City Hall), Park 의성 (Daegu City Hall), and Shin Woo-bin (Korea Armed Forces Athletic Corps).
The women's team, led by head coach Cho Yoon-jeong (Dignity Academy) and coach Yoo Hwa-soo (NH Nonghyup Bank), consists of Ku Yeon-woo (CJ CheilJedang), Park So-hyun (Gangwon State Government), Baek Da-yeon, Lee Eun-hye (both of NH Nonghyup Bank), Jeong Bo-young (Andong City Hall), and Jang Su-jeong (Incheon City Hall).
The selection of players for specific events, including mixed doubles, will be determined at a later date.
The men's team will play the second round of the Davis Cup World Group Play-offs against India on September 18 and 19, and then continue training at the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center.
On the men's team, world number 150 Kwon Soon-woo is drawing high expectations.
Kwon Soon-woo, who won consecutive ATP Challenger singles titles in Phan Thiet, Vietnam in January, Gwangju in April, and Wuxi, China in May of this year, also teamed up with Hong Sung-chan to win a men's doubles bronze medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
The women's team will assemble on September 14 to begin training, and most of their key players plan to sharpen their competitive edge by participating in the WTA Tour Korea Open held in Seoul ahead of the Asian Games.
On the women's team, Ku Yeon-woo (ranked 179th), who holds the highest world ranking among South Korean female players, is drawing high expectations.
Following her run to the semifinals at the WTA 125 Figueira da Foz Women's Open in June and her runner-up finish at the ITF W100 Evansville tournament in July, Ku secured her first-ever major tournament qualifying win at the US Open last month.
The last time South Korean tennis won a gold medal at the Asian Games was at the 2014 Incheon Games, where Lim Yong-kyu and Chung Hyeon triumphed in men's doubles.
If they reach the top of the podium at this tournament, it will be their first Asian Games gold medal in 12 years.
At the previous Hangzhou Games, Hong Sung-chan won bronze in men's singles, Kwon Soon-woo and Hong Sung-chan won bronze in men's doubles, and Baek Da-yeon and Jeong Bo-young won bronze in women's doubles.
The national team will depart for Japan on September 24.
Tennis matches will take place from September 27 to October 3 on the hard courts of the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Nagoya, featuring a tournament format across five events: men's and women's singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.
