Iran has claimed that it has launched retaliatory military operations in response to a U.S. bombing of its oil tankers.
According to Reuters, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated in a statement on the 9th (local time) that it attacked a U.S. military base in Al-Azraq, Jordan, with ballistic missiles.
Jordanian authorities have not yet confirmed whether the Iranian airstrike actually took place.
Holding the U.S. accountable for the attack on its tankers, Iran also threatened to target oil tankers located off the coasts of Kuwait and Bahrain.
In its statement, the IRGC warned, "We warn all oil tankers in the ports of Kuwait and Bahrain that harbor terrorists and complicit in their evil acts. Whether dropping anchor or docked, they will be attacked, so abandon your ships and withdraw."
Bahrain and Kuwait are Gulf nations located along the coast of the Persian Gulf, and both countries host U.S. military bases.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a maritime security organization of the British Navy, reported that an incident involving a commercial vessel occurred in the Strait of Hormuz.
Specific details of the incident have not yet been released.
Iran has previously claimed control over the Strait of Hormuz and repeatedly targeted vessels that did not navigate according to its stipulated conditions.
Iran's latest attack comes as a retaliatory measure following the U.S. bombing of its oil tankers.
The U.S. military announced on the same day that it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers in response to attacks by the IRGC on U.S. warships.
The U.S. Central Command, which oversees the Middle East, explained that this action was retaliation for Iran launching two ballistic missile attacks against U.S. warships over the past two days.
