Cheong Wa Dae assessed that the summit between President Lee Jae-myung, who is on a state visit to France, and French President Emmanuel Macron on the 8th (local time) served as "an occasion to concretely and substantively advance bilateral cooperation."
Wi Sung-lac, Director of the National Security Office at Cheong Wa Dae, held a briefing at the press center set up in Paris and stated, "The two leaders completed reciprocal state visits in a span of five months, solidifying their mutual trust and bond."
Regarding the agreement to revise the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) between the two countries, Director Wi explained, "We have established an institutional foundation to refine the military and intelligence exchange systems between the two nations and deepen cooperation."
In particular, regarding the economic sector, he noted, "We have deepened nuclear cooperation between the two countries," adding, "Although the two nations are to some extent competitors in nuclear power plant exports, we share the consensus that the potential for cooperation is significant and are pursuing mutually complementary cooperation."
He continued, "We agreed today to launch a high-level civil nuclear dialogue between the two countries, which establishes a crucial axis for cooperation."
Director Wi also stated that the two leaders held in-depth discussions on the international situation, including the war in the Middle East.
"During their private luncheon, the two leaders exchanged views on pending international issues such as the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the war in Ukraine," Director Wi explained, adding, "Through this, they broadened their consensus on major issues and solidified strategic cooperation."
