The city of Suncheon has decided to demolish the lion sculpture at the artificial waterfall located in the Jangdae Park area of Jogok-dong and overhaul the nearby road.
Installed in 2011, the lion statue has continuously sparked controversy for not fitting in with the surrounding landscape of the Dongcheon Stream and Jangdae Park.
The city of Suncheon explained that there were particularly criticisms that it looked eerie enough to cause a sense of fear at night.
However, the entire artificial waterfall is not being dismantled.
Only the lion head-shaped portion will be replaced with a rock wall.
There are also plans to improve the nearby road, which makes a sharp turn due to the structure holding the waterfall, into a two-way, two-lane road.
