An avalanche in the Caucasus Mountains near the border with Georgia in southwestern Russia has left 11 climbers dead, TASS and AFP reported on the 7th local time.
According to the reports, a report was received at around 5 p.m. the previous day that an avalanche had occurred on Mount Mizhirgi in the Bezengi Gorge of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic in Russia.
Footage of the accident posted on social media shows a massive wall of snow roaring down from a mountain peak toward lower ground.
The avalanche swept away 33 climbers scaling the mountain. Among them, 10 managed to escape safely, while 11 were confirmed dead and 6 were injured.
The remaining 6 people are missing and are presumed to have been buried under the snow.
On this day, the second day of the accident, Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations continued search and rescue operations by deploying helicopters and other resources to the site.
Mount Mizhirgi is the eighth-highest mountain in Russia, surrounded by dense forests and glaciers, making it popular among hikers.
