A senior Iranian official has warned that if South Korea intervenes to oppose Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, it will be considered participation in a war, according to local time on September 4 reports by Lebanon's pro-Hezbollah media outlet Al Mayadeen.
According to the reports, a high-ranking security and political official in Iran claimed in an interview that South Korea should not yield to U.S. pressure coercing it into cooperating with illegal U.S. military operations.
The official stated, "South Korea must not sacrifice its national interests and reputation for the aggressive policies of the U.S. that undermine security and stability," adding, "South Korea is well aware that the root cause of instability in the Strait of Hormuz is the aggressive actions of the U.S. and Israel, and it must not overlook this."
The official warned, "If South Korea takes actions against Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran will regard it as direct military aggression against Iran and participation in a war."
The official also emphasized, "We will not stand idly by at any complicity in crimes that violate the Iranian people and their rights," and stressed that "as long as illegal U.S. intervention, the blockade against Iran, and the economic war continue, the restoration of regional security is impossible."
Citing Al Mayadeen, Iran's Fars News Agency reported the official's remarks and added that the South Korean presidential office stated no decision has been made yet regarding pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to participate in a war against Iran, though it noted the possibility of deploying a "search and rescue unit" to the Strait of Hormuz.
An official from the presidential office stated on September 4 regarding whether overseas deployment could be reviewed as a way to make a military contribution to the Strait of Hormuz, "We are thinking that we have some room to maneuver as long as there is no major damage to the defense readiness posture on the Korean Peninsula," adding, "To make a substantive contribution in Hormuz, we must take into consideration the readiness posture on the Korean Peninsula, and we are reviewing various aspects regarding that readiness posture."
