North Korea's financial contribution rate to the United Nations regular budget has been lowered compared to its previous level.
According to a report recently released by the UN Committee on Contributions, North Korea's financial contribution rate for 2026 was calculated at 0.004%, Voice of America (VOA) reported today.
This is lower than the 0.005% rate set by the UN late last year to be applied from 2025 through 2027.
The committee explained that this adjustment reflects data from 2019 to 2024.
UN assessed contributions are amounts allocated to all member states to cover the UN budget, newly calculated every three years based on objective economic indicators such as each member state's gross national income (GNI) and external debt.
In this report, North Korea's per capita GNI was estimated at 644 dollars.
From 2019 to 2024, North Korea's nominal gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by an annual average of 0.3% in dollar terms, while real GDP increased by an annual average of 0.4%.
However, North Korea has already paid 159,073 dollars last month as its UN regular budget contribution for this year.
This is more than six months past the deadline for paying UN regular budget contributions.
The financial contribution rate applied to North Korea has been on a downward trend in recent years.
A rate of 0.006% of the UN regular budget was applied from 2019 to 2021, which was lowered to 0.005% starting in 2022, and has now dropped to 0.004% this year.
