An incident occurred at a self-service gas station in Busan where mixed gasoline and diesel fuel was sold due to an employee's mistake, causing around 180 vehicles to break down.
According to Saha-gu, Busan, today (Sept. 5), an employee at a gas station within the district accidentally poured diesel into a gasoline storage tank while transferring fuel on the morning of August 25.
The following day, customers who pumped fuel from the affected dispenser noticed abnormal symptoms and reported them to the gas station and the Korea Petroleum Quality & Distribution Authority.
One victim stated, "My car developed problems, making strange noises while driving, so I went to a repair shop and was told that mixed fuel had been put in."
The number of damaged vehicles identified by the gas station so far stands at approximately 180. Due to this incident, vehicle owners are left burdened with repair costs ranging from a minimum of around 1 million won to upwards of tens of millions of won.
As the controversy grew, the gas station side stated that it would compensate affected vehicle owners for repair costs and other damages.
Saha-gu plans to take administrative action against the gas station in accordance with relevant laws, such as suspending business operations or imposing a penalty surcharge, as soon as the results of the investigation by the Korea Petroleum Quality & Distribution Authority are released.
Under the Petroleum and Alternative Fuel Business Act, businesses that sell petroleum products that fail to meet quality standards or fail quality inspections are subject to administrative penalties.
If confirmed to be counterfeit petroleum, a 3-month business suspension can be imposed. If judged to be substandard petroleum, a 3-month business suspension or a warning can be issued. Alternatively, if a penalty surcharge is imposed instead of a business suspension, it can be up to 100 million won for counterfeit petroleum and up to 30 million won for substandard petroleum.
