Actors Choi Minsik and Han So-hee shared that their own unique reinterpretation was the driving force that helped them overcome the pressure of starring in the remake of the film "The Intern".
Attending the press and distribution preview for the movie "The Intern" held at Yongsan CGV on the afternoon of the 4th, Choi Minsik opened up by saying, "I started with a heavy sense of pressure, but it felt like it would leave a bad taste if I only let the pressure weigh me down."
He continued, "People often make efforts to reinterpret great films or plays. I have a habit of listening to music on YouTube, and I was deeply moved after hearing senior artist Han Young-ae's remake of 'Bonguri' by the late senior artist Kim Min-ki. That made me think, 'Ah, this is it.' When teacher Han Young-ae sang 'Bonguri,' she probably didn't think about singing it better than senior Kim Min-ki. We thought the same way. We put aside the brilliant original work and decided to unite to create it in our own way. That is how the result you are seeing today came to be. Please be generous in your understanding even if it falls short of your expectations. I just want to tell you that we did our absolute best."
Han So-hee also honestly confessed, "It would be a lie to say I excluded the original work," adding, "Because the original work was such a massive success, I started with a great deal of pressure from the very beginning."
However, she explained that her pressure turned into confidence as filming progressed. Han So-hee added, "Although it is a remake and features the same characters, there were points we unraveled with our own emotional tone, so we trusted that and paid attention to the combination of the youth running the company and the senior intern."
Director Kim Do-young, who helmed the film, explained, "Since it is a remake, we wanted to take what was good and change what needed changing. Above all, I thought our film was a narrative about Seon-woo's growth. Even though she is a successful CEO, she blames herself and feels anxious about her marital and surrounding relationships, and I wanted to make a story about overcoming those struggles. The incidents involving Seon-woo and Ki-ho are similar, but the details are slightly different. We envisioned characters more grounded than those in the original. We also focused the narrative on how Ki-ho and the young employees initially feel uncomfortable and awkward around each other before building a friendship."
"The Intern" depicts an office life that transcends generations and job ranks, beginning when "Ki-ho" (Choi Minsik), a 37-year veteran senior intern, joins the company of "Seon-woo" (Han So-hee), who rapidly emerged as a dark horse in the fashion industry three years after its launch. It is a remake of the 2015 global box-office hit "The Intern".
Choi Minsik played the senior intern role originally portrayed by Robert De Niro, while Han So-hee transformed into the young CEO, delivering an acting ensemble that bridges generations.
"The Intern" will be waiting for audiences in theaters on September 16 (Wednesday).
