Rep. Choi Hyung-du: "Media Sector Left Behind in AX Era," Urges Government and Industry Support

People Power Party Representative Choi Hyung-du noted that all industries are racing toward AX (AI Transformation), urging government and industry support by stating, "At a time when we are striving to forge a new destiny, the media sector is notably falling behind."

Rep. Choi, who serves as the opposition secretary for the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee, made the remarks on the 4th at the National Assembly, where he co-hosted a seminar titled "AX Transformation Seminar for a 100-Year Database of South Korean Media" with fellow People Power Party Representative Cho Eun-hee.

In particular, Rep. Choi analyzed, "Broadcasting, a strategic asset that has elevated South Korea's national prestige, is declining in the advertising market and trapped in a vicious cycle of deficits due to a lack of assets. If left neglected without building any foundation, many of the assets that sparked the miracle of 'K-content' will end up stored on OTT platforms like Netflix."

Rep. Choi pointed out the disadvantageous revenue structure for broadcasters, saying, "Our fact-finding survey showed that migration costs make it difficult to transfer such content, and utilizing cloud services also structures massive expenses."

He then urged that "(the government and industry) must work together with media outlets that hold and provide content to establish an AX foundation through reasonable costs."

Representative Cho Eun-hee, who serves as the opposition secretary for the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, also attended the seminar and stated, "Vast data endowed with credibility and publicness are core strategic assets that will develop the Korean-language-based AI ecosystem and sustain our language and culture, yet the realities facing broadcasting and newspapers are by no means easy."

Rep. Cho called for support, stating, "Even if they try to build AI infrastructure, the burden of introducing expensive GPUs and operating costs makes it a structure difficult to achieve through the strength of individual media outlets alone. We must support media outlets so they can manage their vast data assets safely and economically through the government's public cloud."
