A grey heron with feathers turned white due to a partial loss of pigmentation has been spotted in Jeju.
According to Documentary Jeju Director Oh Seung-mok today (the 4th), a white heron was observed at around 5 p.m. the previous day along the coast of Haengwon-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju City.
This individual is presumed to be a leucistic heron, which appears white due to a partial lack of pigment cells in its feathers and skin caused by a genetic mutation.
Director Oh said, "This individual, which appears to be a juvenile hatched this year, shows a stark color difference compared to other young birds born in the same year," adding, "It is rare to witness a leucistic heron."
Grey herons, large water-dwelling birds, typically feature grey backs and bodies, white heads, and a black stripe running like a crest from their eyes to the back of their heads.
Juveniles do not yet have fully developed crests.
