Four advanced U.S. companies are investing a total of 2 billion dollars, equivalent to approximately 2.8 trillion won, in South Korea across the semiconductor, advanced materials, and clean energy sectors.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and KOTRA announced that four American companies—Air Products, Axcelis Technologies, Corning, and Pacifico Energy—have reported foreign direct investment totaling 2 billion dollars in Washington, D.C.
The reporting ceremony took place on the 3rd (local time), with Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-gwan and other officials in attendance.
Looking at each company, Air Products, a global leader in industrial gases, will pursue a project to expand its semiconductor gas supply facilities in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province.
This project marks Air Products' largest investment in South Korea since entering the market, and the company plans to build rare gas facilities for advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes.
Axcelis, a company that manufactures ion implantation equipment—one of the key semiconductor manufacturing processes—will expand its South Korean plant to strengthen its role as an export hub targeting the Asia-Pacific region.
Corning, an advanced materials company specializing in specialty glass for displays, plans to accelerate the introduction of facilities related to advanced materials for next-generation mobile devices and semiconductors.
Renewable energy company Pacifico Energy is accelerating its project to build a 3.2-gigawatt offshore wind power complex in the South Jeolla and Gwangju region.
The government expects this investment to expand the domestic high-tech industrial ecosystem and serve as an opportunity to strengthen supply chain cooperation between South Korea and the United States.
