A rear-end collision inside the Surisan Tunnel on the Suwon-Gwangmyeong Expressway in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province, led to a vehicle fire at around 4:50 a.m. today (September 4), causing traffic congestion during the morning commute as emergency crews handled the aftermath.
According to police and fire authorities, the accident occurred when a 6.5-ton truck and a 1-ton truck, both traveling in the second lane of a three-lane section, collided. The impact pushed the 1-ton truck into the first lane, where it was subsequently struck by a following Sportage vehicle.
Shortly after the crash, a fire broke out in the Sportage and spread to some facilities inside the tunnel.
Although the fire has been completely extinguished, all lanes were temporarily blocked to handle the accident and clean up.
While only the third lane remains closed for tunnel repair work and other operations, heavy traffic congestion during the morning commute continues.
A police official said, "Aside from two people who sustained minor injuries—the driver of the Sportage and the driver of the 1-ton truck—there were no other casualties," adding, "We are investigating the exact cause and circumstances of the accident."
