TikTok's parent company, Chinese tech giant ByteDance, is reportedly pushing to significantly expand its artificial intelligence capabilities by constructing an additional data center in China's northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that ByteDance has been in early-stage talks with local firms regarding the construction of a data center to add 5 to 6 gigawatts (GW) of computing capacity.
The planned AI data center cluster is set to be established in Jining District, Ulanqab, with sources noting that ByteDance aims to take delivery of the facilities by early 2028.
Thanks to its cool climate, cheap electricity, and proximity to Beijing, Ulanqab has already become a strategic hub where major domestic and international IT companies have successively invested in infrastructure.
Telecom equipment maker Huawei, short-form video and AI firm Kuaishou, e-commerce giant Alibaba, and U.S.-based Apple are among the companies that have previously invested in computing-related facilities in the region.
Projections also suggest that the investment scale for the data center being pursued by ByteDance could reach hundreds of billions of yuan.
