Typhoon Krovan, the 24th typhoon of the season, has rapidly moved north near Okinawa, Japan, and is forecasted to turn westward and head south again starting tomorrow.
According to the current projected path, it will not head directly toward Jeju, but due to strong winds and high waves around the typhoon, preliminary gale advisories are expected for most areas of Jeju early tomorrow morning (September 4).
The Korea Meteorological Administration and the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters announced that as of 3:00 a.m. today, Krovan was moving northwestward at a speed of 17 km/h from waters about 380 km southeast of Okinawa, Japan.
The center of the typhoon was located at 24.5 degrees north latitude and 130.9 degrees east longitude, with a central pressure of 994 hPa, a maximum wind speed of 21 meters per second, and a gale radius of 250 km.
The typhoon is expected to approach Okinawa rapidly this afternoon and intensify, with maximum wind speeds expanding to 23 meters per second, a gale radius of 260 km, and its movement speed accelerating to 26 km/h.
The path of the typhoon is set to change significantly tomorrow.
Krovan is forecasted to move to 28.4 degrees north latitude and 127.1 degrees east longitude by 3:00 p.m. today, where its direction will shift westward and its movement speed will slow down sharply from 18 km/h in the morning to 8 km/h in the afternoon.
Following this, it is projected to move south to 27.6 degrees north latitude and 127.1 degrees east longitude by 3:00 a.m. the day after tomorrow, and move south-southeastward on the 6th and east-southeastward on the 7th.
Under the current trajectory, the center of the typhoon is not expected to pass directly through Jeju, but the island is anticipated to feel the impact of strong winds and high waves.
In a preliminary advisory issued at 4:30 a.m. today, the Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted the possibility of gale advisories being issued for Jeju Island—excluding the southern part of Seogwipo City—between midnight and 6:00 a.m. on September 4.
High wave advisories are expected to gradually expand starting from the outer southern distant waters of Jeju Island this morning. The Jeju Regional Meteorological Administration's short-term forecast also projects that waves will rise up to a maximum of 5 meters, centered around the eastern coastal waters and southern distant waters of Jeju Island on September 4 and 5.
Krovan is a typhoon name submitted by Cambodia, which refers to a type of tree.
