Chinese President Xi Jinping, making a state visit to Egypt for the first time in 10 years, stated that he opposes external interference in the Middle East region.
According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency, President Xi made the remarks during a summit with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi held at the Al-Ittihadiya Presidential Palace in Cairo on the 2nd, local time.
During the meeting, President Xi noted that "regional countries should strengthen dialogue on peace and security, seek to restructure the security architecture, and determine their own destiny."
He went on to say, "There are many pending issues in the Middle East with great internal correlations, so a comprehensive solution must be sought," adding, "The Palestinian issue is at the core of the Middle East problem and must never be ignored or marginalized."
Although the United States was not explicitly mentioned in the remarks released through state media, President Xi stated, "The international community, especially external major powers, should abandon double standards, respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of regional countries, and safeguard their security and stability," effectively targeting the U.S.
This visit to Egypt is interpreted as a move to strengthen China's regional influence ahead of its summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, expected this month.
President el-Sisi said, "Egypt hopes to closely cooperate with China in areas such as trade, investment, infrastructure construction, finance, science and technology, and new energy, while strengthening military and security exchanges," according to Xinhua.
Earlier, President Xi visited Kyrgyzstan to attend the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which has emerged as an "anti-Western solidarity" bloc, and held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders.
Leaders from 10 countries, including Russia, India, Iran, and Pakistan, attended the SCO summit and jointly issued a message condemning military attacks against Iran.
