Police have cleared Harold Rogers, interim head of Coupang who was accused of committing perjury during the National Assembly's joint hearing on the Coupang controversy, of the charges.
According to police today, the Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Metropolitan Investigation Group recently decided not to forward Rogers, who faced charges of perjury under the Act on Testimony and Appraisal Before the National Assembly, to the prosecution, citing insufficient evidence.
However, former Coupang CEO Park Dae-jun and Vice President Cho Yong-woo were found to have credible charges against them, and were sent to the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office without detention yesterday.
Auditor Yoon Hye-young, who faced the same allegations, was forwarded on August 31.
Police did not disclose the specific reason for deciding not to forward Rogers.
Previously, the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee filed a complaint against Rogers and others on charges of perjury under the Act on Testimony and Appraisal Before the National Assembly following the conclusion of the joint hearing on the Coupang incident.
During the hearing, Rogers stated in effect that he had met a suspect in a personal data leak at the instruction of the South Korean government (the National Intelligence Service). In response, the National Intelligence Service stated that it had never given any such instructions to Coupang and requested that a complaint be filed on grounds of perjury.
Former CEO Park Dae-jun was accused of giving false testimony regarding allegations of covering up the industrial accident death of logistics center worker Jang Deok-jun while attending the National Assembly's Coupang hearing as a witness on December 30 and 31 of last year.
Vice President Cho and Auditor Yoon also faced allegations of committing perjury during the hearings.
