Director Park Chan-wook has teased that his upcoming project, "The Gangs of Newgate," will be "the film with the most brutal level of violence among all my movies."
During a special 20th-anniversary screening event for his film "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" held at the Seoul Art Cinema on August 29, Director Park hinted about his new film "The Gangs of Newgate," saying, "It is a very violent movie. It features the most brutal scenes out of any movie I've made, while also being a film that explores guilt and love."
"The Gangs of Newgate" depicts the story of a gang of robbers who raid a small town in the American West during a heavy downpour, and a sheriff and a doctor who pursue them for revenge. Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Tang Wei, and Adèle Exarchopoulos have confirmed their casting.
Matthew McConaughey is set to play the "town sheriff," Tang Wei the "sheriff's wife," Austin Butler the "leader of the outlaws," Adèle Exarchopoulos the "outlaw leader's wife," and Pedro Pascal the "doctor."
This marks Director Park's first time directing an American film in 13 years since "Stoker," as well as his first western. Although the western is a Western genre, it is expected to yield a genre film that highlights Park's unique style.
Having gained global renown with his Vengeance Trilogy ("Oldboy," "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance"), Director Park has announced his return to the revenge genre and even teased a high level of intensity, heightening anticipation among domestic and international fans. With the screenplay for "The Gangs of Newgate" written by S. Craig Zahler, known for "Bone Tomahawk" and "Brawl in Cell Block 99," an unprecedented level of violence and brutality is expected.
For Director Park's new project, his longtime filmmaking comrades who have worked with him on numerous films including "Oldboy"—such as cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon, music director Cho Young-wuk, and art director Ryu Seong-hee—are teaming up once again.
"The Gangs of Newgate" is scheduled to begin filming next year.
