Lee Hyun-seop, the grandfather of Peppertones member Lee Jang-won and grandfather-in-law of musical actor Bae Da-hae, has passed away.
On the September 1 broadcast of SBS's "Same Bed, Different Dreams 2 - You Are My Destiny," the recent updates of the couple Lee Jang-won and Bae Da-hae living together with his 100-year-old grandfather were portrayed. Towards the end of the broadcast, the production team shared the unfortunate news through a subtitle reading, "Grandfather Lee Hyun-seop has passed away."
The couple Lee Jang-won and Bae Da-hae first revealed that they had moved in with his grandfather through a broadcast last July.
Bae Da-hae stated, "We have a new roommate. We are living together with my 100-year-old grandfather-in-law," while Lee Jang-won explained, "We prepared to live together since last fall, and it has been five months now."
Regarding the background of moving in together, Bae Da-hae explained, "It has been 30 years since my grandmother-in-law passed away. Ever since then, my grandfather had been living alone. His parents live in the countryside and his aunts live nearby, taking turns caring for him over the past 30 years. This situation was already anticipated even before marriage."
Grandfather Lee Hyun-seop was known to have spent his daily life in remarkably good health, defying his age of 100.
He called taxis himself using a smartphone, had a breakfast of vegetable juice and boiled eggs every morning, and read the newspaper. He also touched hearts by writing in his diary, "It feels like people actually living here now that the kids are with me, rather than when I was alone in the big house."
On the September 1 episode of "Same Bed, Different Dreams," which was his last broadcast, Grandfather Lee Hyun-seop was shown meeting Bae Da-hae's 5-year-old nephew, Rowoon. In the broadcast, the grandfather smiled contentedly while reading a letter written by Rowoon himself and handed him a 50,000-won bill as pocket money.
Grandfather Lee Hyun-seop was born in Anju, Pyongannam-do in 1926 and moved to Seoul in 1940. He graduated in the 9th class of the Korea Military Academy and has a history of serving in the Korean War. After being discharged, he worked for about six years as the manager of the Tokyo branch at Korea Shipping Corporation, which was managed by the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies foundation. Afterwards, through interviews with officials from the Office of the Five Northern Provinces, he shared memories of crossing the 38th parallel and stories from his time serving in the war.
