A car bomb attack targeting police has occurred in the north-central Mexican state of Zacatecas, leaving 11 people injured.
Security authorities have attributed the attack to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico's most prominent criminal organizations.
According to the local daily El Universal on the 1st local time, a car bomb exploded on the night of the 30th of last month in front of the municipal police headquarters in the southeastern city of Ojocaliente, Zacatecas.
The blast injured 11 people, including two female police officers and three minors, while damaging or completely destroying 36 buildings and 11 vehicles.
Police investigations revealed that the suspects parked a running, stolen vehicle behind a police patrol car and detonated an improvised explosive device remotely the moment an officer approached to inspect it.
Immediately following the incident, local government operations and in-person classes were completely suspended, and the region's biggest festival, the Cactus Fruit and Grape Festival, was also canceled.
The attack is analyzed as retaliation for the arrest of armed cartel members in nearby Villa Garcia on the 29th of last month.
This is not the first time explosives have been used in an attack against police.
In Zacatecas state alone, 10 explosive-related incidents have occurred this year, 7 of which targeted law enforcement personnel, including military and police forces.
