Food prices are rising continuously in Japan due to soaring prices of raw materials and packaging.
According to NHK and other reports on September 1, Japanese food manufacturers Kewpie and Ajinomoto announced today that they are raising the prices of mayonnaise, seasonings, and other products.
Kewpie decided to raise the prices of a total of 224 items, including mayonnaise, salad dressings, and pasta sauces, starting with shipments dispatched on November 1.
The price hikes range from 3% to 25%, and its flagship mayonnaise (450g) will increase by about 9%, going from 517 yen to 565 yen.
In addition, the prices of 601 other items, including commercial-use seasonings and salads, will also rise by approximately 2% to 38%.
Ajinomoto stated that it is increasing the prices of 39 items, including its core seasoning and salt products, by about 5% to 15%.
Among these, prices for household products will go up starting with deliveries made on December 1.
The companies explained that the price hikes are due to rising costs for raw materials, packaging materials, and logistics caused by the impact of the situation in the Middle East.
A survey result has also emerged showing that approximately 4,900 food products are seeing price increases starting this month.
According to a survey conducted the previous day by Teikoku Databank, a private credit research agency, targeting 195 major Japanese food manufacturers, food and beverage items with price hikes starting this month reached 4,923 items.
Comparing the number of items seeing increases, it is more than triple that of the same month last year and the highest so far this year.
In addition, the prices of more than 3,000 food products are projected to rise in October as well.
