Regarding the controversy over nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family Yong Hye-in maintaining her proportional representation lawmaker seat, Cheong Wa Dae stated on the 1st that she should be given an opportunity to explain through a personnel confirmation hearing.
During a meeting with reporters on this day (the 1st), a Cheong Wa Dae official responded to the question, "Is Cheong Wa Dae condoning nominee Yong's retention of her proportional representation seat?", by saying, "Regarding the ministerial nominee, there should be an opportunity to explain the various questions and doubts currently being raised by the public through the confirmation hearing process."
While it has been the customary practice for proportional representation lawmakers to resign from their parliamentary seats when nominated for a cabinet post, Yong, a second-term proportional representation lawmaker, has expressed her intention to maintain her parliamentary seat while carrying out her ministerial duties.
In response, criticism has been raised not only by the opposition camp, but also within the broader progressive bloc and parts of the ruling camp, arguing that she should give up her parliamentary seat.
