It has been confirmed through SBS reporting that the prosecution, which is investigating allegations that the police covered up and downplayed the "Jang Yoon-gi case," has summoned and questioned Park Seong-ju, the former Chief of the National Office of Investigation who was the top decision-maker at the time.
The dedicated investigation team at the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office (led by Senior Prosecutor Kim Bong-jin) called in former Chief Park last week as a suspect on charges of abuse of authority and obstruction of rights.
Former Chief Park is suspected of ordering investigators in May to separate and handle Jang Yoon-gi's murder case of the late Lee Chae-won and the sex crime case involving a Vietnamese immigrant woman.
The prosecution suspects that the primary motives behind former Chief Park's separation order include the failure to properly implement the "stalking crime countermeasures document" reported by the police to the presidential office in March, and the failure to follow the "follow-up callback" manual for stalking crime reports regarding Jang Yoon-gi that had been filed with the police, ultimately failing to prevent the murder.
The prosecution believes he may have issued an instruction to the effect of "ensuring that the sex crimes are not revealed" in an effort to evade reprimand and criticism that the "Jang Yoon-gi case" occurred due to the failure to implement those countermeasures and manuals.
In addition to former Chief Park, the prosecution has also booked four National Office of Investigation officials who were in the chain of command for the "Jang Yoon-gi case" as suspects on the same charges.
The prosecution is reportedly planning to wrap up the investigation into the "Jang Yoon-gi case" allegations soon and indicting former Chief Park and other suspects as early as this week.
