Prosecutors have demanded the death penalty, the maximum sentence under the law, for Jang Yoon-gi, who murdered a high school student. The bereaved family submitted a petition to the court signed by 50,000 citizens urging the court to sentence Jang to death.

Prosecutors demanded the death penalty during the fourth hearing for Jang Yoon-gi.
They concluded that there is a high risk of reoffending if he returns to society and that the victims have suffered immensely.
This comes about four months after Jang murdered the late Lee Chae-won on May 5.
In court, Jang mostly admitted to the charges, including dragging the victim away with the intent to sexually assault her and murdering her when things did not go as planned.
However, regarding a 40-centimeter cable tie found in the passenger seat of the vehicle, he denied having prepared it for the purpose of committing the crime.
Jang is also accused of confining and sexually assaulting a woman in her 20s who was a part-time work colleague on May 3, two days before the murder, and of illegally filming female students seven times last year while working as a public service worker.
Prior to the trial, the bereaved family held a picket protest demanding strict punishment.
Some 50,000 people also signed a petition calling for the maximum sentence to be handed down.
