DPK Criticizes False Closure of Jeju Missing Persons Case, Urging Police Reform

The Democratic Party of Korea criticized the People Power Party for using the false closure of a missing persons case in Jeju to urge a halt to the abolition of prosecutors' supplementary investigation rights, telling them to "stop making everything about the prosecutors."

Deputy Floor Spokesperson Lee Ju-hee said in a commentary released today (29th), "The police's false closure and poor investigation are absolutely unacceptable. The argument to return to a system that expands prosecutors' investigative powers once again cannot be a solution," as she criticized the stance.

"The Jeju missing persons case occurred while prosecutors' supplementary investigation rights legally existed under the current system," Lee pointed out, adding, "Yet, the People Power Party is turning the police's poor investigation into a pretext to expand prosecutors' powers again."

She continued, "The perception level of the People Power Party has not moved an inch past the Yoon Suk Yeol administration, which was thrown into chaos by the overconcentration of prosecutorial power," and argued, "The police's wrongdoing must be corrected through police reform."

Spokesperson Sohn Myung-su also issued a commentary stating, "The recently exposed poor responses and irresponsible case handling by the police can never be dismissed as mere individual deviations," and added, "If there are things that need to be changed—including systems, organizational culture, and democratic control—they must be changed without exception."

Sohn added, "As the police's responsibilities must grow as large as their powers have expanded through the broadening of their investigative authority, we will push forward with police reform from the perspective of the public."
