The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced today (the 29th) that it will thoroughly investigate the cause of the fatal accident involving a Korea Railroad Corporation (Koreil) worker at Uiwang Station on the Gyeongbu Line and take strict action under a zero-tolerance policy.
Expressing concern that similar accidents continue to recur, the ministry also decided to formulate reinforced safety measures to eradicate structural problems.
Immediately following the accident, the ministry dispatched its railway bureau director, railway police, railway safety inspectors, and inspectors from the Korea Transportation Safety Authority to the scene to support recovery efforts and investigate the cause.
The exact circumstances and cause of the accident will be determined through an investigation by the railway police and labor inspectors from the Ministry of Employment and Labor.
At around 7:20 a.m. today, a Koreil worker died while performing railcar-shunting operations within the premises of Uiwang Station on the Gyeongbu Line.
In 2022, a railcar-shunting worker also died in an accident at Obong Station in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province.
Fatal accidents involving railway workers also occurred in 2024 at Guro Station (two deaths), last year at Geundeok Station (one death), and near Cheongdo Station (two deaths).
