The K League has announced it will dispatch a business support team to help normalize K League 2 club Gimpo FC, which was recently embroiled in a public funds embezzlement scandal involving an employee.
The league stated on the 28th that starting next month, it will send a support team consisting of professionals including lawyers and accountants to the Gimpo club office.
This measure was taken after the Gimpo City Hall, the investing and contributing organization of Gimpo FC, officially requested support from the league to handle the situation.
Last month, Gimpo detected signs that a staff member in their 30s surnamed A, who was in charge of accounting, had embezzled approximately 8.3 billion won of company funds and filed a complaint with the police.
While tracing the flow and usage of the funds embezzled by employee A, the police are also investigating whether there were any accomplices or directives from superiors.
The support team dispatched by the league is composed of three professionals: Ahn Chi-jun, head of the League Operations Headquarters, who will serve as team leader, along with attorney Yeom Seong-jun (head of the legal team) and accountant Ahn Jung-hyeok (club licensing team).
They will be stationed at the Gimpo club office for the time being to overhaul the overall club operation system.
In particular, they plan to improve the compromised accounting processing procedures and thoroughly inspect whether there are any potential regulatory violations in the existing player contract process.
Additionally, they will closely examine whether Gimpo faces any issues maintaining its K League club licensing qualifications due to this embezzlement incident and assist with follow-up responses.
The league stated, "Through this dispatch, we will help Gimpo swiftly handle the situation, stabilize office operations, and work together to restore the trust of its fans and the citizens of Gimpo."
