▲ Calvatia nipponica discovered in an apple orchard in Unbong
Namwon, North Jeolla Province, announced today (August 28) that the rare Calvatia nipponica mushroom has been discovered in an apple orchard located in Hwashin Village, Unbong-eup, near Mount Jiri.
A total of five Calvatia nipponica mushrooms were found in this apple orchard. They are spherical, white, and measure 10 to 30 cm in diameter.
Since 2021, four to five Calvatia nipponica mushrooms have appeared at this location every year.
Experts believe that the mycelium of the Calvatia nipponica remains in the soil and grows into mushrooms whenever the growing conditions are met after passing through the summer each year.
Calvatia nipponica mushrooms appear in summer and autumn in bamboo groves, grassy fields, and mixed forests rich in organic matter, and are known to be effective for stopping bleeding and detoxification.
Calvatia nipponica mushrooms have also been discovered for 13 consecutive years up to this year in the nearby Ipseok Village, Sannae-myeon, Namwon.
